Russell, WI (August 9, 2023) – Police in Bayfield County say a man identified as Anthony J. Gardner, of Red Cliff, lost his life after a tragic traffic collision with a Bayfield police car on Wednesday, August 2. Authorities responded to the scene of the crash at around 10:20 p.m. 

A pedestrian and a City of Bayfield Police Department squad vehicle were involved in a collision on South 13th near West Bresette Hill Road in Russell Township. 

Sheriff’s deputies found the male pedestrian deceased at the scene. Ashland Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating the incident. 

Wisconsin State Patrol worked to help reconstruct the scene in order to investigate the details of the crash.
